I’m sure most of you would have heard of Daft Punk and a fair few of you would know about also know about another band from Versailles, Phoenix. Phoenix had their big break in 2009 with their album ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix’ that contained hits such as ‘1901’, ‘Litsztomania’ and ‘Lasso’. What most people wouldn’t know is that these two bands share a link, this link comes in the form of Laurent Brancowitz (guitarist for Phoenix). Brancowitz formed a short lived group called ‘Darlin” (a tribute to a Beach Boys song) in 1992. This group also contained Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo on guitar and Thomas Bangalter on bass, and with Brancowitz on drums. The young lads had just released a few songs through Douphonic Records. Upon hearing some of their music an English music journalist from Melody Maker referred to their music as “a bunch of daft punk”. Instead of dismissing the reveiw the boys found it amusing. The band broke up later in the year De Homem-Christo and Bangalter started to gain interest in electronic music, theyused the music journalists review as inspiration for their next band name that they formed in 1993, Daft Punk. Around the same time Brancowitz joined his brothers’ (Christian Mazzalai) band, ‘Phoenix’. The rest as you would say is history!
